When the nerve of a tooth becomes infected, endodontic treatment, also known as a root canal, may be needed. The treatment helps to save the tooth by extracting the infected pulp from the root, rather than resorting to an extraction. Afterward, a filling or a crown will finish off the tooth and get it back to its normal look and function.
At your appointment
A local anesthetic will be given to numb the gums by the infected tooth. The pulp will be extracted with a very fine instrument to remove the infection. Depending on your situation, the tooth will then be sealed with a filling or capped with a crown. This is typically completed within one or two visits.
