Most commonly performed are tooth extractions. This might be needed because of impacted teeth, severe tooth decay, or gum disease, for example.
Wisdom teeth are often needing to be pulled due to complications in their growth. Some emerge crooked, are impacted, or there simply is not enough room in the mouth for them, negatively affecting the other teeth. Because the molars are hard to reach, they also often get neglected in daily brushing and flossing, leading to decay and infection.
Oral surgery is needed for other procedures such as with implants to fill in gaps of missing teeth, or for preparing for dentures, among other procedures.
What Happens at an Appointment
X-rays will be taken prior to the surgery. A local anesthetic will numb the area for the procedure and sedation options are also available if needed. After-care instructions will be given and a follow-up appointment scheduled if necessary.
